How to Select A Topic for Your Online Course
If you are struggling with the topic of the online course, this blog will be very helpful :)
You may have extensive experience and expertise in a certain field, such as guitar, mathematics, and chemistry. But before you start teaching online courses, it is very important to know the confusion of students. If your courses aren’t addressing your students’ needs, they will be useless.
So the first step of selecting a course topic is to find out what students are looking for.
In this article, I will recommend two very useful tools to help you find it.

Yes, you read it right. The first tool I recommend is Google.
Just type your keywords in Google and it will show you what students look for.
For example, you want to teach “class 10 math”…
Tips:
- Give space and you could get google suggestions.
- Or you could type alphabets a-z to get more search terms.
- You can also get more information in “People also like”.
Another tool that can be used to verify your topic is Google Analytics (https://marketingplatform.google.com/about/analytics/#?modal_active=none), which is absolutely free. With the help of Google Analytics, you could find out the time taken by a user to check out your course page.
2. Uber Suggest Tool
Another tool I recommend is Uber Suggest.
- Simply type ubersuggest.com
- Enter a domain/keyword and country
- Click “SEARCH”
Then you could get very detailed results.
Search Volume — The number of searches “math class 10” (your keyword) has during a month.
SEO Difficulty — Estimated competition in organic search, the higher the number the more competitive.
Paid Difficulty — Estimated competition in paid search, the higher the number the more competitive.
Cost Per Click (CPC) — Average cost per click if you wanted to pay Google to be seen as an ad. If someone is paying a high CPC, the keyword is usually more valuable.
You can find more useful information in the keyword ideas section.
Having a >5000 search volume and < 35 scores for SEO difficulty is very ideal keywords. As you can see, math class 10 is a good keyword.
Tick some keywords and export them to CVS as reference.
Now you know what students are interested in:
- sample paper
- chapter 3
- formula
- …
You could use this list to help you decide on the topic to teach for your online course.
